In collaboration with the Centre for Advancing Collaborative Healthcare & Education (CACHE) at U of T, we offer IPE-accredited seminars on various topics, designed to facilitate inter-professional collaboration across health science disciplines and equip young professionals with the skill sets necessary to work in a collaborative environment. Occasionally, we host independent events that are open to all UofT students.

Mitigating The Influence of The Pharmaceutical Industry in Psychiatry: An Interprofessional Approach

In this collaborative seminar, students will be introduced to the critical appraisal of research literature by evaluating a real study in the field (Efficacy of Paroxetine in the Treatment of Adolescent Major Depression: A Randomized, Controlled Trial by Keller et al., 2001). Students will then be exposed to interprofessional strategies for the critical appraisal of research literature, and methods of identifying pharmaceutical influence in psychiatric research and clinical practice before applying these skills to evaluate the assigned paper. Students will leave the event employed with a new perspective on interprofessional approaches to identifying implicit biases in research, as well as methods to specifically mitigate commercial bias in psychiatry research.
Learning objectives include: developing a foundational knowledge of commercial/pharmaceutical bias in the context of psychiatric clinical-decision making; conflict resolution, and communication skills required to promote patient/client/family community-centred care while balancing stakeholder interests; and working collaboratively as part of an interprofessional healthcare team to identify and mitigate biases in the research literature

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Healthcare: Addressing Concerns and Mitigating Biases

Students will leave the event employed with a new perspective on interprofessional approaches to identifying implicit biases in research, as well as newfound knowledge of how we can address concerns regarding the implementation of AI and ML in healthcare.

Design and Clinical Decision Making: Improving Patient Safety with Medication Reconciliation

Medication errors are a serious issue that pose a threat to patient safety. According to the Institute of Medicine, medication errors are the number one type of medical error made in hospitals at the rate of approximately 1 error per patient per day. Medication reconciliation is a process designed to reduce hospital medication errors.
Even though Accreditation Canada set medication reconciliation as a patient safety goal more than 10 years ago, the implementation of medication reconciliation has proven to be extraordinarily difficult.
This workshop will review the process and types of medication reconciliation as well as the challenges of implementation. In the interactive segment of this workshop, you will work in teams to analyze the barriers to implementation, and work together to design an IT-based solution. Teams will then present and evaluate each other’s proposed solutions.
An Interprofessional Approach to Exploring and Addressing Opioid Medication Safety

This seminar series titled “An Interprofessional Approach to Exploring and Addressing Opioid Medication Safety” focused on the importance of medication safety in pain management involving opioids.
​
Guest speakers including Sean Patenaude from CAMH and Ambika Sharma from ISMP Canada spoke on the issues concerning opioid safety and shared their contributions for improved safety.
Choosing Wisely: An Interprofessional Approach to Resource Stewardship

This elective seminar will address the importance and application of an interprofessional approach to effective resource stewardship. Presented with a real life project (reducing use of sedatives in hospital) carried out in Toronto, students will work together in groups to discuss their potential roles in optimizing resource stewardship and quality of care. Healthcare professionals involved in the project will share their experiences, and demonstrate each profession’s effective contributions to resource stewardship.
IHI Seminar Series - Hosted by UofT CAPSI in Collaboration with UTIHI and the IMAGINE Clinic

The IPE event will be centred around a patient case on type 2 diabetes. Students will have the opportunity to work in interprofessional groups to discuss the case and develop a care plan. A panel of professionals from varying backgrounds including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work will be present to share how they would approach the case and discuss how interprofessional collaboration can improve patient care. Subway sandwiches and light refreshments will be served. This event is being hosted by UofT CAPSI in collaboration with UTIHI and the IMAGINE Clinic.
Applied Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals

Interactive workshop focused on benefits of mindfulness practices, and strategies for integration into clinical care at both individual and organization levels. Workshop participants had the opportunity to engage in a sampling of mindfulness practices including mindful sitting, movement, walking, and breathing space meditations.
